Ventilation shutdown plus (VSD+) is a cruel method where animals are killed en masse by shutting off ventilation and pumping in heat, causing suffocation and organ failure. Millions of poultry were killed this way during the 2022 avian flu outbreak. Despite its cruelty, the AVMA approves VSD+ in certain circumstances, prompting calls for change.
